PROFESSIONAL SOLAR PANEL CLEANING

Solar panels need to be cleaned at least twice a year, once in the spring and late again in the summer. The reason for this is that this is the period where PV panels produce most of the electricity for the owner. As much as 5 times more electricity is produced in the summer as it is in the winter.

Solar panels are much like windows in that they have a glass surface. Unlike windows they face upwards like Velux windows and do not respond well to dirt or scratches. If you damage a window it will not have any detrimental effect, if you damage a panel it will reduce it’s effectiveness. THIS IS WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO CLEAN PANELS CORRECTLY.

Solar panel cleaning is a specialised job. It is not safe or practical for a window cleaner to use a bucket and ladder, the panels are not made to withstand any weight being placed on them. It’s also not safe to use chemicals or cleaning products on them.

How to clean solar panels…

Bird droppings, pollution, dust, tree sap, pollen, soot, salt and other fine particles all build up an opaque layer of grime on the panels reducing their efficiency.

This is why only a pure water system such as one that uses de-ionised water should be used. A pole system means that there is no chance the panels will be damaged by any weight being placed on them. A soft brush needs to be used so that the glass isn’t damaged. De-ionised water will not leave spots caused by hard water which sits on the panel surface.
